Lapis Lazuli

Lapis lazuli has travelled farther through human culture than almost any blue stone. It was treasured in Mesopotamia and Egypt, carved and collected in China, and ground into ultramarine for European painting. Its gold-coloured pyrite can resemble a night sky, but its deeper value is historical: blue carried across mountains, courts, tombs, manuscripts, and sacred images.
